╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ABOUT HELP ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The help in this system is organized by menu function and
sub-option. If you want help on any function simply select it
from the help menu and information on it will be displayed.
While displaying the information, you may select the print
command to send that section to the printer. You may also
select the print documentation option to send all of the
documentation to the printer. When the command prompt <ACTION>
is visible, selecting that option will display an example of
graphic output related to the topic. All of the examples in
this help are from the Atlantic version. Users of the Pacific
version (PACTRAK) should not be concerned as the functions being
shown work identically as the Atlantic version (HURRTRAK).
(The help in this system is for both HURRTRAK & PACTRAK.)
*010GENERAL INFORMATION
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ GENERAL INFORMATION ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
HURRHIST, part of the Hurricane Tracking System is designed to
allow a user to query, in many different ways, into the vast
database of tropical cyclones. It allows rapid access to all
the tropical systems for the years of 1886 - 1992 in the
Atlantic and 1949 - 1992 in the Eastern Pacific.
It features:
- 20 HIGHLY DETAILED plotting charts (9 in Pacific)
- A user defined HIGHLY DETAILED plotting chart
- High resolution geography
- Print capabilities (data & tracking chart)
- Ability to show storm information on the chart (CHART NOTES)
- Ability to select storms by a number of different search
criteria
- Ability to display many user definable city locations and
names on one chart
- Wind/Pressure correlation chart
- New user interface (pull down menus)
- VGA graphics
- Mouse capability
- PSEUDO-ZOOMING for viewing detailed charts
- Excellent performance
Performance
For maximum performance with the system, use a software caching
program (SMARTDRV, etc.).
Mouse Control
If you have a MS compatible mouse installed on the system,
mouse control will be enabled. On the "text" screens mouse
usage follows the normal software industry standards. The left
button is the selection "button" for all menu functions and
sub-option items. Mouse control in the graphic modes of the
system are unique to the function you are using. These control
will be described, as they apply, within the documentation for
those functions.
Keyboard Control
The menu functions and options can be selected without a
mouse by first hitting the <ALT> key. This highlights a
letter for each available function. Entering that key will
activate that function. The same actions are required for
selecting a option within a function. The <ESC> key is the
equivalent keyboard action for the cancel command. The TAB
and arrow keys will navigate you around the systems data
screens. With a little practice keyboard navigation becomes
very easy. For maximum benefit from the system, I would
suggest using the mouse.
Units of Measure
The system unit of measure is set to US (Miles per hour /
statute miles) when installed. It can be easily changed within
the OPTION menu function to Metric (Knots / nautical miles) of
the Hurricane Tracking system. ALL SPEEDS AND DISTANCE VALUES
ARE DISPLAYED IN THE UNIT OF MEASURE SELECTED.
Printing
The system's default printer port is LPT1. If your system's
printer port is different, edit the LPT.DAT file and change
the one line entry to the proper port definition.
Printing of hurricane charts
In order to print the hurricane tracking charts, the DOS
GRAPHICS command must be initiated BEFORE entering the system.
(It may be best to put it into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.) Unless
your printer is specified in the list below, try using the
default GRAPHICS profile by entering the GRAPHICS command
without a type option (i.e. GRAPHICS /R). This command should
only be issued once per DOS session. Its stays "resident"
in your PC's memory until you reboot or turn it off.
Your DOS manual has more information on this command but for
best results make sure you use the /R option. The following is
more information on the DOS GRAPHICS command for DOS 6.0.
Graphics
Loads a program into memory that allows MS-DOS to print the
information displayed on your screen. Use the GRAPHICS command
only if you are using a color or graphics adapter.
The GRAPHICS command supports the CGA, EGA, and VGA graphics
display modes.
Syntax
GRAPHICS [type] [[drive:][path]filename] [/R] [/B] [/LCD]
[/PRINTBOX:STD|/PRINTBOX:LCD]
Parameters
type
Specifies the type of printer. The following list shows
each valid value for this parameter and gives a brief
description of its meaning:
COLOR1
An IBM Personal Computer Color Printer with black
ribbon
COLOR4
An IBM Personal Computer Color Printer with RGB (red,
green, blue, and black) ribbon
COLOR8
An IBM Personal Computer Color Printer with CMY (cyan,
magenta, yellow, and black) ribbon
HPDEFAULT
Any Hewlett-Packard PCL printer
DESKJET
A Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printer
GRAPHICS
An IBM Personal Graphics Printer, IBM Proprinter, or
IBM Quietwriter printer
GRAPHICSWIDE
An IBM Personal Graphics Printer with an 11-inch-wide
carriage
LASERJET
A Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer
LASERJETII
A Hewlett-Packard LaserJet II printer
PAINTJET
A Hewlett-Packard PaintJet printer
QUIETJET
A Hewlett-Packard QuietJet printer
QUIETJETPLUS
A Hewlett-Packard QuietJet Plus printer
RUGGEDWRITER
A Hewlett-Packard RuggedWriter printer
RUGGEDWRITERWIDE
A Hewlett-Packard RuggedWriterwide printer
THERMAL
An IBM PC-convertible Thermal Printer
THINKJET
A Hewlett-Packard ThinkJet printer
[drive:][path]filename
Specifies the location and name of the printer profile that
contains information about all supported printers. If this
parameter is omitted, MS-DOS looks for a file called
GRAPHICS.PRO in the current directory and in the directory
that contains the GRAPHICS.COM file.
Switches
/R
Prints the image as it appears on the screen (white
characters on a black background) rather than reversed
(black characters on a white background). The latter occurs
by default.
/B
Prints the background in color. This switch is valid for
COLOR4 and COLOR8 printers.
/LCD
Prints an image by using the liquid crystal display (LCD)
aspect ratio instead of the CGA aspect ratio. The effect of
this switch is the same as that of /PRINTBOX:LCD.
/PRINTBOX:STD or /PRINTBOX:LCD
Selects the print-box size. Check the first operand of the
PRINTBOX statement in your GRAPHICS.PRO file. If that
operand is STD, specify the /PRINTBOX:STD switch. If that
operand is LCD, specify the /PRINTBOX:LCD switch. You can
abbreviate PRINTBOX as PB.
************************ EXAMPLES **************************
For a DESKJET 550C: GRAPHICS DESKJET /R
Epson LQ 800: GRAPHICS /R
LASERJET II : GRAPHICS LASERJETII /R
If your are having difficulties getting a profile to work, you
may need to contact your printer manufacturer to get the proper
profile.

*020SELECT STORMS BY LOCATION
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SELECT STORMS BY LOCATION ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to specify a set of search criteria,
based on location, which is then used to analyze the historical
database and return the set of storms which meet that criteria.
The search criteria and their data fields are:
Storm Position:
These are the fields which specify the location of interest:
Latitude - Latitude of location (N) (xx.x)
Longitude - Longitude of location (W) (xxx.x)
HURRTRAK system (0-110)
PACTRAK system (80-180)
Storm Date (optional):
The following fields are entered if the user wants to narrow
down the set of storms by the date that they affected the
specified location. The data fields are:
Starting Date (MMDD) - Beginning date range in month and day.
Ending Date (MMDD) - Ending date range in month and day.
Wind Speed (optional):
These field are entered if the user wants to view only the
storms which were of a certain strength at the specified
location. The fields used are:
Low Wind Range (MPH/KTS) - Low end of wind range.
High Wind Range (MPH/KTS) - High end of wind range.
(Note: Unit of measure is selectable from the main tracking
program)
Movement (optional):
These 4 fields are used if the user wants to view only the
storms that had a specified movement at the specified
location. The associated data fields are:
FROM: - compass bearing of "left" end of range of movement
TO: - compass bearing of "right" end of range of movement
Forward speed low range - Low end of movement speed
Forward speed high range - High end of movement speed
An example of a query where all of these fields are used
follows:
If a user wants to select all of the storms that passed within
60 miles of 26N and 80W, that occurred between August 1 and
September 30, that had peak winds between 50 and 150 and
that were moving from the SE from 5 to 15 (MPH or KTS), the
field values entered would be:
%

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SELECT STORMS BY NAME ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to select all the storms that match
a particular name. Partial keyword searches are possible by
entering just the beginning of a name (i.e. EL with no year
specified will return 11 storm with names like ELLA, ELENA,
ELOISE, etc.). The associated data fields are:
STORM NAME - The name (or part) of the desired storm.
STORM YEAR (optional) - The year the storm occurred.
*040SELECT STORMS BY YEAR
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SELECT STORMS BY YEAR ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to select just the storms for a
particular year. The only data field is:
STORM YEAR - The year desired.
*050SELECT STORMS BY STRENGTH
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SELECT STORMS BY STRENGTH ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to select only storms that had a MAX
peak wind within a certain range wind speed range. The data
fields are:
Low Wind Speed Range - The low end of wind speed range.
High Wind Speed Range - The high end of wind speed range.
Example: To select all the storm which had a peak max wind speed
between 100 and 125 the Low wind speed range would be 100 and
the High Wind Speed Range should be 125.
*060DISPLAY SELECTED STORMS
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ DISPLAY SELECTED STORMS ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
After a storm or set of storms are selected, the Display option
on the main panel will be highlighted. Picking this option will
display the list of storms selected along with key data about
each storm. A example of that data follows:
%

large tracking chart will graphically display additional
tracking charts (see <S> option above). As the mouse is
moved around the screen different tracking charts
are highlighted. Clicking on the left button again will
then display (full screen) the highlighted chart.
. By clicking on the open area of the screen when viewing any
chart except the large tracking chart, the user will "swap"
to the large tracking chart.
. By clicking with the RIGHT BUTTON, the user will exit the
PLOT storm track function.
Chart legend:
When the storm track is plotted there are several items to be
aware of:
. The color of the track is an indication of the strength of
the storm. The track is gray for tropical storm force winds
or less, black for winds from 75 to 110 MPH (65 to 96 KTS),
red for winds from 111 to 154 MPH (96 to 133 KTS) and white
for winds of 155 MPH (134 KTS) or greater.
. Every position of the storm except for the latest one is
marked with a small circle (10 mile diameter). All 1000Z GMT
observation times are colored white while 2200Z GMT
observations are red. All other position circles are left
uncolored.
Chart legend (optional items):
Depending how the system options are set additional data may be
displayed when plotting a storm. The system will optionally
plot Chart Notes and city distance on the tracking chart:
. Chart Notes: This data is written to the right of a plot point
and is of the format MMDDYY/TTTT WSP PRS, where MMDDYY is
the date, TTTT is the time, WSP is the wind speed and PRS is
the central pressure. i.e. 090189/0000 70 995 NOTE: If
observation points are very close together or the large scale
map is used, some chart notes will not be shown to prevent
overwriting.
. City Distance: The distances from the storms center to certain
cities or locations is displayed (in green) at that location.
The cities/locations to display is controlled within the
"Updating City Locations" function of the Hurricane Tracking
system.
GRAPH:
This option displays a graphical chart indicating the selected
storm's change in intensity (wind speed and central pressure)
throughout its life. A small red circle on the wind plot
indicates the time the storm became a hurricane (if ever).
^* Selecting ACTION at the end of this help text will display *
^* an example of a graph. *
